Sierra Leone Book Project

Sarah KingEducation is a key to a better life, for and individual, a community, a country and world as a whole.

  • My name is Sarah King. I come from Sierra Leone and now living in Australia. I am currently finishing my Honours Degree in Media (Film and Writing) at Southern Cross University. I work at the Richmond Tweed Regional Library. I am a member of Sanctuary Northern Rivers Inc., Zonta Club Southern Gold Coast Tweed and a member of the African Community in Lismore.

  • The children of Sierra Leone are in dire need of books. The Sierra Leone Book Project Australia has collected children's books donated by generous communities in the Lismore and Tweed Heads areas in NSW - enough to fill a 20' container, now ready to be shipped to Sierra Leone.  Sierra Leone is still struggling to recover from the aftermath of a decade of war and destruction. Learning materials, especially books are largely unavailable to the majority of children in schools around the country.

  • This project is partnering with PEN International - Sierra Leone Centre, to provide books for children in schools throughout the country. The Sierra Leone Book Project Australia will also help PEN International further their work in setting up reading and writing clubs in schools. Reading and writing skills are an abject need for the majority of children in Sierra Leone.

  • The project has raised enough funds to purchase an empty 20' container and is currently seeking $5,000 to ship the container load of books to Sierra Leone.

  • As a filmmaker, I will produce a short documentary on the project in June 2014. The 5 highest donors get a copy each of the DVD featuring the lovely kids who will benefit from the project.

  • If this project does not attract the requested amount, the funds will go into the bank, while fundraising continues until the target amount is reached.

  • “Education is not a way to escape poverty – It is a way of fighting it.” -
  • Julius Nyerere
In this day and age where education and information is a survival tool, it is important for people, especially children and youth, to have access to education, information and study materials that will eventually put them in a position to improve themselves, their communities, their country and the world as a whole. This could reduce the development gap between Sierra Leone and advanced nations.

If you cannot contribute, that's understandable, but please share this site and help in this small way to get the container of books to children in Sierra Leone.
